Finding Health Insurance for Individuals

There are two basic types of insurance – individual and group. With group insurance there are many people on one large policy. This is commonly done at places of employment. However if you work at a small company or are self employed, health insurance for indivduals is what you need. With some companies you can get group rates, however make sure these companies insurance plans are accepted by your doctor and local hospital. You don't want to pay for insurance that no one will accept.

When shopping around for a health plan, make a list of your criteria. Which parts of medical coverage are most important to you? For example if you are planning to have a baby maternity coverage could be added to a basic policy. If you wear glasses or contacts you can choose to add vision insurance. Of course the opposite is also true, you may want a bare bones policy that covers the basics. Luckily many of the insurance companies in business today let you customize a policy to suit your needs.

Healthcare for the self employed is one issue that many people are dealing with. If you work for yourself or own a home based business you still need medical insurance. If your health is good and your medical records are good, you can likely find reasonable prices on a policy. However the price goes up with various factors such as what is on your medical records, your age, whether or not you smoke, etc. The cost of a policy is determined by a professional called an underwriter.

After you get a health insurance for indivduals quote, you can decide which if any of the insurance companies are right for you and what kind of policy you want to have. Then you need to submit an official application for coverage. Following a thorough review of your records and information, and an interview by an underwriting professional, you will be deemed either insurable or uninsurable. If you are insurable, the company will notify you of the cost and terms of your policy. You will also need to sign a contract, which can be done through the mail if you are getting your insurance online or over the phone.
