What is Nationalized Healthcare?

Nationalized healthcare, also called universal healthcare, is a government funded program that covers the medical costs of its citizens. In the United States there is currently no universal healthcare but there is a heated debate going on about it. Some citizens think it would be the best thing for the United States while others are vehemently opposed to the idea of universal healthcare. It helps to learn more about this issue before taking one side or another, which is why there are many people on the fence so to speak.

Universal healthcare is a reality in many, if not most, industrialized countries. The government provides healthcare to their citizens even if those citizens cannot afford it. Sounds great, so why are so many people grumbling about it? In the United States, some are concerned that universal healthcare would raise taxes and take away freedom of choice when it comes to medical insurance and health related choices. And, they feel it would have a detrimental effect on the healthcare received by our senior citizens. Of course there are two sides to every story, such as those who are in support of universal healthcare.

The individuals in support of a universal healthcare plan may feel that by implementing such a plan, the government would be helping citizens who are unable to obtain health insurance. There are many reasons why people end up uninsured and do anything they can to avoid a pricey doctor bill. One reason is because their employer does not provide insurance. Or, the individual is unemployed or self employed and cannot afford to pay for a health insurance policy. While it is easy for indigent pregnant women and children under the age of 19 to get health assistance it is much harder for other adults.

Whether or not the United States will adopt a nationalized healthcare plan remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, the citizens are making themselves heard by voicing their opinions on this issue. You can see debates on the news channels, on the Internet and in the newspapers. If you have a particular opinion about the issue of universal healthcare in the United States, don't just sit there – write your senator(s) and tell them how you feel.
