Reasons for Short Term Health Insurance
The most common type of health insurance is that which lasts for an extended or indefinite amount of time. However, there sometimes arises a need for short term health insurance. This is insurance coverage that only lasts a specific period of time before expiring. Temporary health insurance is commonly used by individuals who are between jobs but still require the benefit of insurance coverage. Then the coverage ends when a job with benefits is obtained and new coverage may begin.
On average, a short term insurance policy lasts for six months. Some may be able to extend coverage for 12 months if necessary but this depends on your insurance agency and the particular policy you have. One thing you should know about temporary insurance is that it does not provide coverage for preexisting conditions in most cases. If you have a preexisting condition and just left a job, ask your former employer if extending your current coverage is possible through COBRA. This is a plan that is funded by the government to allow employees leaving their jobs to extend their health benefits while seeking new employment.
Another type of temporary health insurance that is very different from the aforementioned is Medicaid coverage for pregnant women. This is insurance coverage that lasts through the pregnancy and postpartum period, then ends. The baby may continue to get Medicaid, but the mother may have to apply for an individual insurance policy if her employer does not provide medical insurance benefits. Sometimes individuals can get group rates on their policy, however it depends on the insurance company and what they have to offer.
Short term health insurance is not a common thing, in fact it is rarely used except in the cases above. With the economy in the shape it is in and the unemployment rate rising, there will no doubt be more people searching for temporary health insurance. If you have any questions about this type of insurance or want an estimate, speak to a brokerage or insurance agent. These professionals are knowledgeable and experienced when it comes to different kinds of insurance policies. Or you could do your own research before approaching an agency, the online world is a vast resource of information about everything you can think of including types of health insurance.
